Pooch Power

Members of the Sandwell Dog Training Club are certainly putting their pooches through their paces with some thirty of them achieving a ‘Good Citizen Dog Scheme’ bronze award presented by the Kennel Club and a fifteen of those notching up a silver and thirteen a gold award.

Sandwell’s dog warden Maurice Jones, has been working with Diane Hoar who runs the club in a bid to encourage responsible dog ownership.  Maurice said “When you bear in mind that a fair proportion of these dogs are rescue dogs and deemed to have problems, the attainment of these certificates is even more remarkable and shows the results that can be achieved with persistence and determination”.

The thrust of the training focuses on humane methods using praise rather than forcing the dog to perform.  Diane has also had great success providing a ‘dog psychology’ service for people experiencing problems with dogs that constantly bark, chew furniture or are aggressive and has been recommended by the RSPCA.

Maurice added “The old saying that a trained dog is a happy dog and a credit to it’s owner still rings true today and I believe that all dogs should receive at least basic training and with such an excellent training school on the doorstep why not discover for yourself the true joys of responsible dog ownership?”
